Ian Compson EMDR therapy
You're not "broken". Trauma is something that got stuck, not something permanent. EMDR helps the brain to do what it already wants to do.
Who I help
You may recognise some of this...
You feel "on edge" or easily overwhelmed, even when nothing seems wrong. You feel stuck in patterns you can't seem to shift. Something from the past still affects how you feel or react. You're managing day - to - day, but not really feeling like yourself. Talking about things hasn't quite been enough.
If any of this feels familiar, you're not alone. Things can change and EMDR can help.
How I can help
A different way forward
Talking can help - but it doesn't always change how you feel because the part of your brain that holds those experiences hasn't fully processed them yet. EMDR works differently. It helps your brain process difficult experiences so they feel less intense, less present, and easier to manage. I will work at your own pace, in a calm and non-judgmental space, focusing on what feels most important to you.
You don't have to figure this out on your own.

About Myself
I'm an EMDR therapist with over 20 years' experience working in both NHS and private settings. I am a member of EMDR UK. I tend to work with people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or affected by experiences that haven't fully resolved.
You might not always have the words for what's going on - just a sense that something isn't quite right, or that things feel harder than they should. My role is to help you make sense of that, at your own pace.
My approach
I work in a person centred way. Enabling you to work at your own pace sharing only what you feel comfortable sharing. Helping you make sense of things without rushing the process. Using EMDR and a collaborative approach, we'll work in a way that feels manageable and focused on what matters most to you.
Reaching out for therapy can feel like a big step. I aim to make that first step as straightforward and comfortable as possible.

What to expect from EMDR therapy
A structured evidence-based approach
EMDR is a structured therapy designed to help the brain process distressing or unresolved experiences. It is recommended in clinical guidelines for the treatment of trauma and related difficulties.
Initial sessions
We begin with an assessment and preparation phase which includes understanding your current difficulties and relevant experiences, identifying goals for therapy, and developing strategies to help you feel stable and grounded.
EMDR processing sessions
During EMDR, you will be asked to bring to mind a specific memory, thought, or feeling while engaging in guided eye movements. This process helps the brain reprocess the experience so it becomes less emotionally intense. You remain in control throughout, and the pace can be adjusted at any time.
Between and after sessions
Ongoing processing between sessions is common. Some people feel tired while others feel relief. I always ensure you feel grounded before the session ends.
Length of therapy
The number of sessions required varies depending on your goals and the nature of the difficulties.
EMDR fees and practical information
Choosing the right pace and session length is an important part of effective EMDR work.
Session fees
50-60 minutes session - £75
75-90 minutes session - £115
Longer sessions are often recommended for EMDR processing, as they allow more time to work through material at a steady and contained pace.
Payment
Payment is required at least 24 hours before the session via bank transfer. Details will be provided when booking. Sessions are confirmed once payment has been received.
Cancellations
I require at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations or changes. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice will be charged at full fee.

"So Tuesday we ended up at track training, and there were a lot of dogs about. Most smaller types which didn't affect me but there were also bigger dogs, obviously naturally I was wary of them but that extreme fear seemed not to be present which was amazing"

"Ian's approach to supporting me has been invaluable and the positive impact cannot be measured highly enough"
